If Water Could Talk [GAIA NOVA]

If your water could talk, what would it say?

Biological life without water is implausible and potentially, totally impossible. As Earth cooled and oceans formed billions of years ago, it was within these ancient waters that the first forms of life emerged. It was within this environment that the first form of life, the single-celled organism, was created. This evolutionary genesis of life on Earth is profoundly similar to the process of embryonic development, where human life is generated by and formed within the primordial waters of the mother’s womb.

It’s important to draw a parallel between these processes because the macrocosmic story of life on Earth and the microcosmic story of human life are selfsame. It took millions of years, but the single-celled organism of early Earth’s early waters developed consciousness in the form of humanity, and humanity relies upon the water within itself to create itself. Both stories originate in water, and both yield life and consciousness.

Ancient cultures from varying continents share practices rooted in the sanctity and healing properties of water. The extensive list of such cultures includes the Egyptians, Hebrews, Norsepeople, Germanic tribes, Northern and Southern Indigenous Americans, Vedic Indians, Japanese Shintos… and many more. This uncanny and specific similarity of very different traditions begs the question: What was the special property of the ancients’ water that made it sacred and healing?

In 2004, a book called The Hidden Messages in Water was published that demonstrated the relationship between words and water. The author conducted experiments where he spoke or wrote kind or harsh words to water, crystallized the subjects, and observed the crystals under a microscope. The outcome was astounding: positive words directed toward water repeatedly produced symmetrical, beautiful crystals, whereas negative words directed toward water resulted in asymmetric, ugly crystals. The scientific community’s reception of this book, its studies, and its author were vicious, but something about the message of The Hidden Messages in Water has continued to ring true to millions of people.

This book and its concept offers a clear answer to how and why varying traditions’ water had sacred and healing properties. The short answer is that in these traditions, people gathered and offered beautiful words to their wells, springs, baths, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls – blessing it, placing their hope and best intentions into it, then the water absorbed and reflected these words and intentions back unto the people.

The ancients held water in the highest possible regard, but what is to be said of modern humanity and its relationship to water?

Will they say that we poisoned ours with exogenous chemicals for “health,” or that we polluted the oceans with materials Nature had never seen before? Or will they say that we shunned our ancestors’ traditions, desecrating water by thinking of it as a utilitarian thing only for drinking and washing?

And to what water does humanity place its attention and best intentions on, with the hope of healing the ailments we see around us?
