The MetaCrisis and GAIA NOVA

Is it better not to understand?

The multi-hyphenate crises of our times have become too layered and too complicated for most of us to truly grasp. This circumstance has been aptly named “the meta-crisis” by modern philosophers, and although the meta-crisis as an idea may seem alarming or confusing, it also brings with it a unique opportunity for tranquility and clarity.

To enjoy the opportunity for clarity requires that we release the burden of the idea that we should understand what’s going on. This is not an invitation to indulge in ignorance, but to accept that the issues of the world may be beyond our capacity for comprehension. In doing so, we create distance between the problems of the world and our personal identity – enabling us to disidentify with the crushing existential anxiety of the collective.

We must draw the distinction between the world’s problems and our personal problems because we did not individually create the issues of the collective; therefore, it cannot be our individual responsibility to resolve them. It is, however, our responsibility to address the way that we may contribute, whether consciously or unconsciously, to their perpetuation.

Fortunately, this is much simpler than addressing the meta-crisis. Unfortunately, it can place tension on our personal identity, lifestyle, and relationships. It requires that each of us address the unspoken conflicts causing subtle angst in our lives, that we do the diligence of inner work, clearing our mental/emotional/physical spaces, and to identify the things which do not make us, our loved ones, or our relationships better than they are right now.

The goal of GAIA NOVA is to blur the perceived boundary between individual and planetary health. As an organization, we believe that your individual wellbeing is a direct correlation with the world’s, and that as you improve the quality of your innerspace and the spaces most immediately surrounding you, the planet at large improves, too.

This month’s broadcast is a call to say the thing you’re afraid to say: to yourself, your lover, friend, parent. Preface it with love before you speak it, express the desire for growth and for clarity. Your bravery in this individual circumstance might just change the world.
